TODAY IN HISTORY: High school worker manipulated her teenage lover into murdering her husband
A US high school worker manipulated her 15-year-old lover into murdering her husband, a jury found on March 22, 1991.
Pamela Smart had conspired with her teenage boyfriend and his three friends to kill her husband the previous year.
Smart, then 22, threatened to withhold sex from her lover unless he killed the man she had married only a year earlier.
After being caught talking about the murder on a wire, Smart was confronted by a detective in her school's car park.
"I have some good news and I have some bad news," the detective told her.
"The good news is that we've solved the murder of your husband. The bad news is you're under arrest."
One of the first trials in US history to be televised, Smart became famous nationwide.
In the trial she was portrayed as a cold-blooded mastermind by her teenage accomplices.
She was given a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole.
She remains behind bars, though her co-conspirators have since been freed.
British cabinet minister John Profumo on March 22, 1963, denied having a sexual relationship with model Christine Keeler.
Profumo, who was then Secretary of State for War, rejected the claims in an address to the House of Commons.
But in June 1963, Profumo resigned from the government after admitting he had lied to Parliament about his relationship with Keeler.
The episode became known as the 'Profumo Scandal' and rocked the British government of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan.
