Today in History - June 1 | Viewers asked to vote by text for who should get a kidney transplant
One of the most controversial moments in reality television history was broadcast in the Netherlands on June 1, 2007.
De Grote Donorshow was a television competition in which 25 people needing a kidney transplant competed for an organ from a terminally ill woman.
Viewers were able to vote on who should receive a kidney via text message.
The show caused outrage in the lead-up to the program, but critics were unaware of the twist at the end.
The host revealed that the program was a hoax, and the terminally ill woman was an actress.
The purpose of the program was to highlight how few Dutch people were organ donors.
As a result, thousands of people registered as donors.
John Lennon recorded Give Peace a Chance in a hotel room in Montreal, Canada, on June 1, 1969.
The recording was done during Lennon's "bed-in" honeymoon with his wife Yoko Ono.
The pair would travel around the world but spend their entire time in a city in a hotel bed.
The demonstration was done as a protest against the Vietnam War.
Lennon and Ono recorded the song in a room full of journalists, photographers and celebrities.
Though Paul McCartney had no connection to the song, he was credited as a songwriter.
Give Peace a Chance was the first solo single released by a member of The Beatles.
At the time, The Beatles were still together, though their break-up would be announced a few months later.
