Today in History - February 8: Crowd gasps as Julie Andrews takes revenge in acceptance speech
Actress Julie Andrews landed one of the most cutting burns of award show history on February 8, 1965.
Andrews only thanked one person in her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.
Andrews had been a Broadway sensation for her lead role in the musical My Fair Lady.
But her casting in the film version was vetoed by studio boss Jack Warner.
Instead the movie starred Audrey Hepburn, with her singing voice dubbed by Marni Nixon.
But after seeing her on stage, another studio head, Walt Disney, cast Andrews in his upcoming movie.
Mary Poppins was a massive hit, and Julie Andrews went on to win the Golden Globe for the role.
"This lovely honour is a wonderful memento of a very happy time. My thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie, and who made all this possible in the first place… Mr Jack Warner," she said.
The crowd gasped and then burst into laughter at the playful jab.
Warner himself wiped away tears as he laughed.
My Fair Lady went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture, while Andrews won for Best Actress.
Though My Fair Lady was nominated for 12 Oscars, Hepburn did not get a nod.
Mary had been entrapped in the plot by Elizabeth's spymaster Francis Walsingham, and sentenced to be beheaded.
On the day of her execution, Mary dressed in crimson brown, the colour of Catholic martyrdom.
All her clothing, the chopping block and everything touched by her blood was burnt to stop relic hunters.
