Today in History - August 7: Saddam Hussein kills son-in-laws after daughters defect
Two daughters of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein defected from the regime on August 7, 1995.
Rana and Raghad Hussein fled to Jordan along with their husbands Saddam Kamel al-Majid and Hussein Kamel al-Majid (top left).
The al-Majids were brothers of each other and cousins of the dictator.
Hussein Kamel al-Majid, a senior military officer and government minister, then gave critical details of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program to the UN and the Atomic Energy Agency.
"Saddam Hussein surrounds himself with inefficient ministers and advisers who are not chosen for their competence but according to the whims of the Iraqi president," he told CNN.
"And as a result of this the whole of Iraq is suffering."
Saddam Kamel al-Majid as a younger man had been cast as Saddam Hussein in a six-hour propaganda movie about his younger life.
In February intermediaries from the dictator convinced the four that all was forgiven and they would be granted a pardon if they returned home.
But when they were back in Iraq, the couples were forced to divorce.
The al-Majid brothers would be dead less than a day later.
According to some accounts, they were killed after a 13-hour firefight. Raghdad Hussein instead claimed they were executed by military officer Ali Hassan al-Majid, better known as Chemical Ali.
When a line-drive hit at a baseball game struck a small child, Red Sox player Jim Rice jumped into the stands on August 7, 1982.
Four-year-old Jonathan Keane suffered a serious head injury at Fenway Park in Boston.
Conscious it would take paramedics a long time to arrive, Rice ran out of the dugout, took the boy in his arms and rushed him across the field to the clubhouse to be treated by the team's medical staff.
The family credited Rice with saving Jonathan's life.
Rice played the rest of the game with blood all over his uniform.
The Hall of Fame player visited the boy in hospital and offered to pay the family's medical bills.
