On April 28, 1994, former CIA officer and double agent Aldrich Ames was sentenced by a US court to life in prison without parole for selling secrets to Russia.
His case was one of the most damaging for Western countries during the former Cold War.
For millions of dollars paid by his Soviet handlers, Ames exposed about 30 American agents embedded in Russian intelligence who were secretly working for the CIA.
