9NEWS Los Angeles bureau chief Robert Penfold on the disenfranchised Americans behind Donald Trump's election win.  

Once again, this election proves that the US is a very different place compared to the regular places most Australian tourists visit such as New York, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles.

A lot of the anger that eventually led to Donald Trump winning the presidency was far from those cities.

If you travel to places such as Ohio, Alabama or Wisconsin, you will find people with a very different view of life. 

They are the ones who feel that government and politicians back in Washington have deserted them and for years, despite all the promises, they are still seeing their jobs disappear and the factories and their workplaces close down.

Many of them even believe, along many non-Trump voting Americans, that a lot of what Donald Trump promised will be unachievable - but they are still prepared to give him a try. 

The alternative was Hillary Clinton, and for them she represented more of the same. No change, and worse still for her this year, she is a true political insider. 

The ultimate outsider, Trump played that up at his rallies day in and day out.

Much to the surprise of those New Yorkers and Californians, he stole away what they thought was a done and dusted deal to put Clinton into the White House. 

Now the question is: with protesters now on the streets, where does Trump even start to fix a very divided nation?
