Giant wave in Tenerife smashes into apartment block

Residents were evacuated from a Tenerife apartment block shortly before a giant wave smashed into it.

Terrifying footage shows balconies on third-storey being wiped out as storms battered the Spanish holiday island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Residents of more than 60 ocean-facing units were escorted to safety in Mesa del Mar on the island’s north east as waves crashed over the sea wall, reported El Mundo.

Holidaymakers and those who could not be looked after by friends or relatives were accommodated in a local sports hall by the Red Cross.

Further south in Adeje, waves broke the window of a restaurant as people were eating.

And a car was dragged into the sea in Jever, although there were no reported fatalities.
