A Sydney man has died after his motorbike was hit by a bus during a holiday around India.

Matthew Ridley, 26, was named by family members on social media yesterday and remembered by friends as fun-loving and warm with a love for travel.

Mr Ridley had just started a trip around India with two fellow motorbike enthusiasts when he was hit by the bus on the outskirts of the capital New Delhi.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

His sister confirmed the news in a Facebook post, saying the family loved Mr Ridley with all their hearts and it was an "excruciating" time.

"He died in a tragic, freak accident in Delhi, India, doing what he loved - riding motorbikes and travelling," she wrote.

"Matt, we always have and always will love you with all our hearts."

Friends also took to social media to express their disbelief, describing the 26-year-old as "fun-loving", "warm", and a "clever young man".

A colleague said he was taken far too soon during his "trip of a lifetime" motorcycling around India.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was providing consular assistance to the Ridley family.
