Surfer hovers above the waves on incredible board

Renowned American surfer Laird Hamilton has seemingly defied gravity by 'foil boarding' above huge waves in New Zealand.

Hamilton is widely regarded as a world expert in the relatively new sport which combines a traditional surfboard and a long hydrofoil.

The equipment enables users to cruise above the surface of the water with less friction and more speed.

Hamilton's latest conquest was filmed from the land, sea and air in Raglan, New Zealand, and provides a rare view of the gravity-defying sport as he seemingly floats above huge waves.

The catch is that he had to be towed into the surf, meaning foil boarding - which has also been labelled 'hover surfing' - might not yet be available to everyone.
