A US child appears destined for a great career in law enforcement after phoning police to tell them his dad had run a red light.

Michael Richardson had just run a red at an intersection in Quincy, Massachusetts, last Saturday when he was warned by his five-year-old son Robbie he had broken the law and the police would find out.

Robbie then took matters into his own hands, phoning a dispatcher as soon as they got home.

"My daddy went past a red light, he has a black truck and he was in the brand new car, my mommy’s car," he told the 911 operator.

The dispatcher then asked who the culprit was, causing Mr Richardson to grab the phone.

"Oh no, I just want to apologise, that's my five-year-old son," he said.

"No problem, as long as everything is all set," the dispatcher replied, laughing.

Mr Richardson said he has now drummed into his son not to waste police time.

"I know how to call the police. Easy peasy," Robbie told the Boston Globe.

"When my daddy goes past a red light again, I’ll call the eye doctor."
