Social media bullying counts as punishment, Bartter wrongful death sentencing hears

The teen who supplied Sydney youth Georgina Bartter with the ecstasy tablet that killed her has argued in court that social media bullying she has suffered as a result is a "kind of punishment".

Friend Rebecca Hannibal gave Ms Bartter, 19, the pill that led to her death at the Harbourlife Dance Festival in November last year.

Today a sentencing hearing was told Hannibal had received messages on social media calling her a "killer" and a "despicable person", the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

"It's traumatic ... it's a kind of punishment," her barrister Phillip Boulter, SC, said.

"The grief involved in the Bartter family can only be guessed at, but my client and her family are also grieving."

The court heard Hannibal has vowed to never again use illegal drugs

Ms Bartter suffered a one in 10 million allergic reaction to the ecstasy pills and died in St Vincent's Hospital soon after.

Hannibal will be sentenced next week.
