Prince Charles’ role as potential leader of the Commonwealth may be decided as soon as Friday, when the 53 leaders come together at Windsor Castle.

Commonwealth countries are gathering for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), and one of the items on the agenda is who will head the organisation after the Queen’s death.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s official spokesman would not confirm who she thinks the position should go to, stressing it was a decision of all leaders of Commonwealth states.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said the Charles should not automatically take over from the Queen, and suggested it could be a role that works on rotational basis.

UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said the matter was a decision for “the 53”.

The Commonwealth Secretariat did not confirm if the succession would be decided this week.

It comes as Prince Harry was appointed a new role as the Commonwealth Youth Ambassador.

His fiancée Meghan Markle will also gain a role in this capacity once the pair is married next month.
