Residents watch as tsunami waves hit Fukushima

Fukushima residents have been filmed watching on as tsunami waves arrived following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit the region early today.

Residents can be seen staring out at the horizon as a tsunami warning siren blares in the background.

Blasé to the risks, the locals stand casually as a wave rushes towards them before hitting the seawall.

Waves were luckily not too high around Fukushima's nuclear reactor, the same site that was decimated by an earthquake on March 11, 2011.

The 2011 earthquake was the most powerful quake in Japan's history with almost 16,000 people and hundreds of thousands left homeless.

Luckily, this earthquake caused minimal damage and the tsunami warning was downgraded by 12pm AEDT.

The highest recorded wave hit Sendai, in Miyagi prefecture, and measured 1.4 metres.

Other waves ranged from 60cm to 90cm at Onahama Port, Kuji Port, Ishinomaki Ayukawa and Soma Port.
