Qld student hospitalised after snake bite

A Queensland student bitten by a snake near his school is in stable condition in hospital.

The Chancellor State College student from the Sunshine Coast was bitten this morning on an oval near the school campus.

Paramedics were called to the school at 9.10am and the boy was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital at Birtinya.

"The student's parents were immediately notified and the child treated by paramedics on site before being taken to hospital," a spokesman for the Queensland Department of Education and Training told nine.com.au.

A Sunshine Coast University Hospital spokeswoman said the male student was in a stable condition.

She added his parents had requested his name not be released.

The grounds of the school have been swept by a snake catcher following the incident. It is not known what species was responsible for the bite.

"Schools are constantly enforcing the message of snake safety to students and also have trained first aid personnel on staff in the event of an incident,” the Department of Education and Training spokesman said.

"Chancellor State College will continue to make students and staff aware to be extra vigilant regarding safety procedures if further snakes are sighted."
