Tiger snake slithers through Melbourne CBD

A major intersection in Melbourne's CBD was cordoned off after a highly venomous Tiger snake was found slithering around.

The reptile was found at the intersection of Spencer and Collins Streets, near Southern Cross Station, around 12.30pm today.

It was on the road for about an hour, attracting many onlookers, until a snake catcher took it away.

The snake catcher, Barry Goldsmith, told reporters it appeared to have been hit by a car.

"I've got to take him to the vet and see if we can get him fixed up," he said.

"They do show up occasionally.

"They hitch hike in cars. It happens quite a lot.

"They come up the Yarra, they come up the drains."

"It's not very often they come right into the CBD though but they do come around here."

The snake has been nicknamed by passers-by as Spencer Collins, alluding to the intersection it was discovered in.

Metro Trains earlier advised commuters to take care near the intersection.

Tiger snakes are venomous, with the ability to kill humans.
