Absent buses spark violence between residents and police in quake-hit Kathmandu

Nepalese riot police have clashed with earthquake survivors as nerves wear thin in the ravaged nation.

Thousands gathered at bus stations near the country’s parliament in the capital Kathmandu, queuing to leave after special bus services were promised to transport people away.

When the buses did not show, tempers frayed and the waiting people clashed with police.

More than 5000 have been killed by the earthquake, with about 8000 injured.

However, stories of hope and survival still abound.

Even those who have lost their homes are grateful for something.

“I’m very sad because of my house,” Satya Ramsuaal told 9NEWS.

“But at the same time quite happy because my family are safe.”

Naleem Pradhananga, who has spent half her life in Nepal and half in Sydney, was at home when the quake hit and expressed relief after having escaped unharmed.

“It was pretty powerful and the bed started swinging and I thought, okay, I’m not that tired,” she said.

Nepal’s government has said no more foreign rescue teams are needed, with enough specialists on the ground to help local efforts.
