A pilot has shown off the awesome capabilities of new generation of passenger planes by taking off in a stomach-churning near-vertical ascent.

The new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner is being put through its paces ahead of its official unveiling at next week's Paris Air Show.

Adorned with Vietnamese Airlines markings, the plane takes off from Washington International Airport and makes for the skies in a gun-barrel vertical motion before the undercarriage can even be lifted.

The pilot then leads the plane on several steep bank turns, showing it has the power and agility to handle the most turbulent of aerial conditions.

The Dreamliner can hold 280 people, although Boeing has reassured potential passengers its commercial flight ascent will not be nearly as extreme as those demonstrated in its test flight.
