Passengers have received severe burns after a hot-water pipe burst under the bus they were travelling in on a Russian street.

Amateur vision shows screaming passengers fleeing the bus as steam and water pour out in the southern Siberian town of Krasnoyarsk last Thursday, the Siberian Times reports.

Pedestrians raced to help passengers while the driver smashed through the bus's windscreen to escape.

It is believed the boiling water shot out of a manhole and turned into a fountain nearly five-stories high.

The Siberian News reports the driver allegedly tried to drive through the geyser but the bus got stuck right on top after part of the road collapsed.

Passenger Svetlana Bochaldina expected to be "boiled to death" after she could not get out of the bus.

"I just do not understand why he went there – why did he risk people's lives?" Ms Bochaldina said.

"All this hot water poured over us, people ran to the back door, but it was locked, we couldn't open it.

"I couldn't breathe, I said goodbye to life and then some man opened the door and we all rushed out."

About 20 people were on the bus at the time and 13 received serious burns and were transported to hospital.
