Ecstatic Catholics in St Peter's Square celebrate new pope's election
Tens of thousands gathered in St Peter's Square as the conclave to choose Pope Francis' replacement began.
The crowd thinned out overnight but there was palpable joy on the faces of those who remained.
They came from all over the world, many proudly waving their country's flag.
These Brazilian men of God wouldn't look out of place at a music festival.
Everyone had a different way to celebrate the important moment.
There were reportedly 15,000 worshippers in the square when the white smoke was spotted. Less than an hour later that had risen to 50,000.
The number of television crews present from all around the world was just as impressive.
There's always a bird. This one is not quite as brave as the one who stayed tight on the chimney as billowing smoke announced the beginning of Pope Francis' pontificate.
There it goes, flying off into the bright blue sky.
A Swiss Guard stood guard after the smoke billowed out.
The gathered faithful grabbed whatever vantage point they could for the historic day.
