Pamela Anderson wants Aussie prisoners to go vegan

Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has said she wants New South Wales female prisoners to go vegan to better their lives behind bars.

In a letter to the state’s Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin this week, Ms Anderson argued switching all-female NSW prisons to a vegan menu would help inmates “embrace non-violence”.

The actor, an honorary director of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, went on to state the diet switch would save the government money and improve the health of the prisoners, of which about 2700 are women.

In response, a NSW Corrective Services spokesman said inmates are permitted to request a vegan diet, but it “hasn’t proven popular”.

Ms Anderson has been a fervent campaigner for PETA for decades, protesting against the use of fur, seal hunting and Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC).

Last year she penned an open letter on her blog explaining that veganism is “a political choice”, adding it is “sexy”.

Australia was ranked the third largest market for veganism in the world last year, with the market expected to grow to $215 million by 2020, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.
