Offshore drilling rig runs aground in Scotland during severe storm

A massive 17,000-tonne oil rig has crashed ashore on the coast of Scotland after it was buffeted by strong winds during a storm.

The Transocean Winner, which was carrying a stockpile of diesel fuel, became detached from a tugboat yesterday during a severe storm.

The turbulent weather battered the monster oil rig, which was being towed from Norway to Malta, until it came ashore on Dalmore beach near Carloway, BBC reports.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) has since cordoned off the area and is in the process of conducting a full investigation over concern some of the rig’s 280,000 litres of diesel may have leaked during the accident.

An MCA spokesman said environmental officials and the oil rig operators will establish the safest method for removing the massive structure.
