Libyan jihadists who stormed the abandoned US embassy in Tripoli have reportedly been filmed cavorting around the compound's swimming pool.

Members of the Dawn of Libya militia invited an Associated Press journalist to tour the facility after they took it over, reports RT.

A video posted to YouTube shows people who may or may not be militants milling around the swimming pool in the portion of the complex that used to house diplomats and their families.

Men can be seen diving into the shallow pool from the second-storey balcony.

The fighters say they took over the embassy last week, after it was abandoned by US diplomats earlier this month during a short-lived ceasefire.

It, and much of Tripoli, had previously been held be a rival militia.

A Dawn of Libya representative claims the group have taken control of Tripoli after heavy fighting.

Zaid Benjamin, the reporter who toured the compound, said those around the pool were drinking whiskey.

The video's release comes two years after militants attacked the US embassy and other facilities in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, killing US ambassador Christopher Stevens, one of his staff and two US military contractors.
