Migrants cemented into underground jail freed in Libya

Harrowing video that purportedly shows African migrants busting out of an underground jail in Libya has emerged.

The video, posted to YouTube overnight, shows the migrants squeezing out through holes in the wall to freedom, with one snatching at bread the moment he breaks out.

It is not known whether the migrants had committed any crimes.

The Libyan Observatory reports the group's jailers had cemented the doors of the dungeon shut, feeding them through small metal windows.

The video is believed to have been shot in Sabratha in the west of the country.

Libya has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks, with reports of migrants from other African countries being enslaved in the Mediterranean country.

CNN reported that migrants from countries like Nigeria and Ethiopia trying to travel to Europe are being routinely captured and sold in Libya.

The slaves are being auctioned off at open-air markets for as little as $400, CNN reports.

The global outrage has prompted the central African nation of Rwanda to offer to take in thousands of enslaved migrants.

"(Rwanda) cannot remain silent when human beings are being mistreated and auctioned off like cattle," a government statement read.

"Rwanda is small, but we will find some space," the country's Foreign Minister Louise Mushikiwabo tweeted.
