A Spanish policeman has died during a Taliban car bomb and shooting attack on the embassy district of Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul.

The attack occurred yesterday near the Spanish embassy in the diplomatic quarter, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said.

"A policeman died in the attack... in Kabul," he said.

Mr Rajoy had earlier announced that a policeman had been injured in the attack.

He also confirmed that the Spanish embassy was not the specific target, correcting earlier statements by the foreign ministry and local police that had suggested it was.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the assault, in which Kabul's Sherpur district was rocked by a massive car bomb and gunfire.

Mr Rajoy said that the embassy had been evacuated.

Afghan police have closed nearby streets and are searching for the attackers, the BBC reported.
