A cordon has also been put in place at the airport, while trams, trains and buses have all been suspended for up to three hours as police conduct investigations into the reports.

Bomb disposal authorities said a safety assessment of the package resulted in a "controlled explosion" at about 10am (local time).

"The cordon will remain in place as a precautionary measure as enquiries continue," police said in a tweet.

Authorities also said that a man was detained by police at the scene.

The Greater Manchester Police confirmed at about 11am (local time) that initial road closures put in place had been lifted, however investigators remain on the scene on the ground floor of the airport coach station.
