Man filming selfie catches pickpocket in the act

An Ecuadorian musician filming a video selfie during a visit from the Pope has unwittingly captured the moment a pickpocket stole his mobile phone.

Diego Mino, a drummer in a local band, was in the crowd of close to one million people who gathered in the country’s capital Quito on Tuesday to hear the Pope give mass.

In a video uploaded by Mr Mino to YouTube today, he can be seen smiling and running through the throng of people while filming himself with a GoPro attached to a selfie stick.

Less than half a minute into the clip a man in a black jacket and two women appear behind him.

As an unaware Mr Mino picks up the pace and jogs through the crowd so do the thieves, dashing in and out of oncoming traffic to keep up with their target.

Mr Mino comes to a stop and the man in the jacket slips his hand into the musician’s pocket without him even noticing.

The video has already been viewed 100,000 times and Mr Mino is hoping someone will recognise the thieves and come forward to police.
