A patient in his 70s has died after an ambulance explosion in Ireland. (9NEWS) 

A patient has died and two paramedics have been injured after an ambulance exploded at the entrance of the emergency department at an Irish hospital.

The ambulance reportedly burst into flames around 11pm (AEST) last night outside Naas General Hospital in the Irish county of Kildare, The Guardian reported.

The patient, a man in his 70s, died at the scene.

One member of the ambulance crew suffered severe burns to the head, face, torso and limbs, local media reported.

He has reportedly been taken to a burns unit at St James’s Hospital in Dublin.

The other paramedic sustained minor injuries and smoke inhalation.

Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
