Mag 5.8 quake hits off Canada's west coast

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has hit off British Columbia on Canada's western coast with no reports of damage, Natural Resources Canada says.

The quake on Monday was very shallow and centred 180 kilometres west of Port Hardy.

"There are no reports of damage, and none would be expected. No tsunami expected," said Natural Resources Canada on its website.

The US Geological Survey estimated the magnitude at 6.0.
