A young fan who tried to keep pace with two Kenyan marathon runners at the Commonwealth Games instead pulled off an embarrassing face-plant in front of millions of TV viewers.

Two hours into last night’s marathon, as the cameras tracked race leaders Flomena Cheyech Daniel and Caroline Kilel, the plucky young boy can be seen breaking into a sprint in the background.

But his bid for glory on a suburban Glasgow footpath came to an abrupt end when he tripped and fell flat on his face.

The youngster's slapstick antics were picked up by keen-eyed TV viewers who posted about the video online.

Tom Lochrie tweeted: "Anyone else watching the marathon and see that kid fall over? I'm in tears."

"Anyone else just see that wee boy who was running next to the marathon runners fall hahahaha," Emma Farquharson tweeted.

James Frost, 45, who was at the race told the Daily Mail the boy’s father had to pick him up off the pavement.

“… all of a sudden he was on the ground. I think he just tried to run too fast, his legs seemed to go from underneath him,” Frost said.

“His dad was over pretty quickly but the kid wasn't happy, I think he was crying as he was taken away, must have grazed his elbows.”

The tumble didn't faze Cheyech Daniel who went on to win gold in the race while Kilel took home silver.
