Justine Ruszczyk's death makes front-page news in US

The fatal shooting of an Australian woman at the hands of a US police officer has made headlines across the United States.

The death of Justine Ruszczyk made the front page of newspapers in her home in Minneapolis but also as far afield as Philadelphia and Washington DC.

The Washington Post's front page showed a photo of Ruszczyk's weeping fiancé above the headline "Deadly Force".

The Philadelphia Inquirer meanwhile ran the headline "She called police, was fatally shot".

The Star Tribune in Minneapolis ran three separate stories on the fatal shooting on their front page, pushing major stories on health care and North Korea to inside pages. ­­

The five most read stories on the Star Tribune's website are all related to Ruszczyk and her killer, Officer Mohamed Noor.

"As between the Minneapolis Police Department and the civilian authorities in my town, it is the civilians who must be in control, not the police," columnist Richard G Carlson wrote in the newspaper.

"These days it appears to be the opposite."

Carlson would go on to demand the sacking of Minneapolis police chief Janee Harteau.

US television networks ABC and CBS also gave prominent coverage to the story.

Noor could face murder charges over Ruszczyk's death as details of the shooting emerge.

Ruszczyk approached Noor's police car dressed in her pyjamas after she called to report a possible sexual assault near her home.

Noor fired across his partner and hit Ruszczyk in the stomach, killing her.

Both Noor and his partner Matthew Harrity were wearing body cameras at the time, but had them switched off.

Minneapolis has been a hotbed of tension after the police shooting of Philando Castile in front of his girlfriend and her four-year-old daughter.

Castile's death galvanised the Black Lives Matter movement, and Officer Jeronimo Yanez's acquittal last month outraged the community.

The Washington Post reports that 547 people have been shot and killed by police this calendar year.
