Canadian PM Justin Trudeau tipped to resign within days: reports

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as Liberal Party leader this week, The Globe and Mail reports, citing multiple sources.

The sources told the newspaper that Trudeau would reveal his plans before a national caucus meeting on Wednesday local time, but the announcement could come as soon as today.

It is not yet clear if Trudeau will immediately step aside as prime minister, or if he will continue on in the role until the party selects a new leader.

Trudeau has been Canada's prime minister for almost a decade, since April 2015, after which he secured two more election victories for the Liberals in 2019 and 2021.

However, polling has shown the Liberals markedly trailing the Conservatives ahead of Canada's next election, which must be held before October.

Trudeau had held discussions with Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc to see if he would step in as interim leader and prime minister, one source told the newspaper, adding that this would be unworkable if LeBlanc plans to run for the leadership.
