'Someone else' set to beat Biden in a landslide, so long as it's not Trump: poll

Practically no-one wants Joe Biden to run for re-election, a new poll has found, but he would still beat Donald Trump in a rematch.

Biden has a dire 33 per cent approval rating nationwide, according to a poll from Siena commissioned by the New York Times.

And in an even more dire indicator of the national mood, only 13 per cent of Americans think their country is on the right track.

Biden's approval rating is now lower than Trump's when he was president.

The president's problem is amplified by the absence of any real support base. While Trump had his diehard fans, Biden has very few devotees.

This is especially apparent when voters are asked about the 2024 election.

Among Democrats, only 26 per cent would vote for him in the next presidential primary.

Among Democratic voters under 30 years old, 94 per cent said they would prefer someone else.

Problematically for Biden, his issues now come in spite of his party being in control of both chambers of Congress.

Come November, Republicans stand a strong chance of taking back both, essentially halting his hopes of passing any part of his legislative agenda.

And yet, Biden's unpopularity is not steering people back towards the last president.

In a head-to-head with Trump, Biden would win 44-41 per cent, not so different from the 2020 margin.

The primary concern with Biden in the poll was the president's age.

Biden is 79, and would be 86 at the end of his second term as president if he were re-elected.

It's a fact that hasn't slipped past Trump, who is 76.

"President Biden is one of the oldest 79s in history, but by and of itself, he is not an old man," Trump wrote on his own social media platform.

"There are many people in their 80s and even 90s, that are as good and sharp as ever.

"Biden is not one of them, but it has little to do with his age. In actuality, life begins at 80."

Aside from Trump and Biden, the next batch of presidential aspirants represent a younger cohort of politicians.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who will likely be Trump's rival in the Republican primary, is 43, which would make him one of the youngest presidents.

Among Democrats, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is 40. California Governor Gavin Newsom is 54.

Vice President Kamala Harris is 57, which is close to the median of US presidents - though she has the unfortunate situation of being more unpopular than Biden.

Liberal firebrand Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is 32, which means she would only be constitutionally old enough to become president a couple of weeks before the 2024 general election.

2024 may be too early for Ocasio-Cortez, but she could still run for president when she is Biden's age, in the year 2068.
