Japanese police unveil first line of robotic defence

The Japanese police force has unveiled its first line of robotic defence, a "wasp" drone designed to take out nefarious airborne automatons.

Rolled out in response to an incident earlier this year which saw a drone carrying a small amount of radioactive material landed on the roof of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's office, the cops' new toy is capable of mid-air interception.

It trawls a net – almost like a spider web – beneath it, and as the demonstration video shows, is able to stop its robotic rival in its tracks.

According to Deputy Police Commissioner Yamashita Fumio, the fleet will be in use during the G8 summit next year.

The original scare, when a drone carrying cesium was landed atop the Prime Minister's office, was carried out in protest of Japanese policy on nuclear power.
