Japanese airline skirts controversy with skimpy uniform

A budget Japanese airline has come under fire over its choice to outfit flight attendants in revealing miniskirts.
Skymark Airlines has been accused by the cabin crew's labour union of "inviting sexual harassment" with its super-short skirt uniform that barley covers the wearers' thighs.
In a statement, the Japan Federation of Cabin Attendants wrote: "We're concerned that the design of this uniform may cause problems. The airline is saying the uniform is meant to attract more customers, but this shows the company is treating women like a commodity."
Members of the public have also taken to the union's website to voice their concerns that the uniforms are impractical, and will leave the women subject to leering stares.
Last week Skymark president Shinichi Nishikubo rejected the union's claims, saying: "It is disappointing that the outfit designed in part for the ad campaign is being seen in a distorted way," adding that cabin attendants who feel uncomfortable about the new uniform will not be forced to wear it.
The airline plans to introduce the sixties-inspired miniskirt uniforms before the end of 2014.
