Couple caught in car in flash flood rescued by locals

A rescue attempt to save a young couple trapped in a car in raging flood waters almost went drastically wrong as the young woman slipped and fell into the swirling torrent.

The car was trapped on Sunday afternoon after heavy rains pounded Dehradun's Nalapani in India.

Locals used a ladder and a tree branch to create a makeshift platform to reach the car.

But as the woman tentatively crossed the platform, it collapsed under her and she fell into the muddy water.

While the water at the edge of the rapids was not too deep.

She struggled to get a purchase on the ground with the current pushing her over and threatening to overwhelm her.

Luckily, a bystander jumps into the water to help her, pulling her to the edge where other locals help her fight against the current using a rope.

According to the Daily Mail, the male driver of the car was later rescued.

He told residents he had been driving along the road when a flash flood hit.
