UPDATE: Hawaii lava flow 'reaches first private home'

The lava flow rolling unstoppably through Hawaii has reportedly reached its first private home.

The scorching river has crossed onto a private property and is threatening a residence, Reuters has reported.

Hawaiians have been given the opportunity to watch their homes consumed by lava in a unique way to say farewell.

A river of molten rock is now mere metres from residences on Hawaii's Big Island, after inching forward for months following an eruption from Kilauea volcano.

It has been reported that local authorities will allow homeowners in the village of Pahoa, directly in the flow's path, to watch from a safe distance as their residences be destroyed by lava to provide a sense of closure.

The lava flow moves about 250m a day depending on the topography, but it is unknown how soon it will reach an inhabited area.

US media has reported the molten rock is just metres from striking a first home.

Residents have been told to prepare for evacuation.

There have also been reports of looters breaking into evacuated homes.

The lava has been flowing from Kilauea since it initially erupted in June.

Authorities have said there is no way to stop the scorching river, but they are working to protect vital infrastructure including power and roads.

Kilauea is an extremely active volcano and has destroyed homes in the past.
