A four-year-old girl has floated almost one kilometre out to sea after falling asleep on her boogie board while swimming in the UK.

Jemima Chambers, of Gloucester, was playing in shallow waters with her cousins during a family holiday in Jersey when she began to drift away.

After spotting a "dot" off the headland, Jemima's horrified mother Rebecca, 36, hailed down a passing jetskiier and hitched a ride to retrieve her wayward young, who she found dozing on the board.

"We spotted this dot off the headland – we couldn’t even make out it was a body but it was her," Jemima's aunt Rachel Le Marquand, who was on the beach at the time, told the Metro newspaper.

"The wind was offshore and she’d floated right around the corner, far too far out to swim.

"Luckily, there was a man on a jet ski nearby and my sister quickly ran over and told him what had happened.

"He didn’t shout at us for being bad parents he jumped on his jet ski with my sister and zoomed off."

Ms Le Marquand said the gravity of the situation was lost on Jemima's siblings who thought it was "marvellous that their mummy was on a jet ski".

The Chambers said they owed their gratitude to the mystery jetskiier who sped off after the rescue.
