Baby Gammy moved to specialist hospital in Bangkok

Gravely ill baby Gammy is set to receive some of the best treatment in Thailand after being moved to an advanced medical facility in Bangkok.

The six-month-old was abandoned by his Australian parents when they discovered his disability, but his surrogate mother Pattharamon Janbua vowed to take care of him after it emerged he had been struck down by a serious lung infection and had a congenital heart condition.

The 21-year-old Thai woman carried twins for the Australian couple, but they only returned with the baby girl.

Gammy has now been relocated to one of the most advanced hospitals in Thailand, in Bangkok after initially being treated in at a hospital in Chonburi province, southeastern Thailand.

He is now receiving treatment at the renowned Samitivej Sriracha Hospital, which has several specialists in treating Down’s syndrome patients.

Hospital staff said they would take care of Ms Janbua and treat her like family.

Speaking through a translator, Ms Janbua said she is “very happy that everybody loves the baby (and) everybody wants to help the baby”.

Since Gammy’s plight was highlighted last week in Thai newspaper Thairath, an online fundraising campaign, Hope for Gammy, has raised more than $190,000.
