Five climbers have died on Mont Blanc and a sixth is missing, a mayor in the French Alps says.

The climbers disappeared overnight as they were trying to reach the Aiguille d'Argentiere, which tops out around 3900m. Mont Blanc, in addition to its primary peak, contains some 200 summits.

The bodies of five climbers have been located, while a sixth has not been found, said Jean-Marc Peillex, mayor of Saint-Gervais, a town at the foot of Europe's tallest mountain.

Search and rescue teams in helicopters are flying over the area.

There have been several deaths this climbing season on the mountain, sparking fears among professional guides that Mont Blanc is fast becoming a tourist "free-for-all".

Two Belgians were found dead on August 2 and six climbers died between July 15 and 30 - two Irish, two Finns, a German and a French person.
