Fans chant dying hockey star's name

Retired ice hockey star Gino Odjick wanted to hear fans chant his name one more time before he died.

And on Sunday that wish came true.

Odjick, who played eight seasons with the Vancouver Canucks starting in 1990, is suffering a terminal heart condition, CBC reports.

Doctors have given the 43-year-old only a few months, even weeks, to live.

When he broke the news on the Canucks' website last Thursday, he spoke about his "special relationship" with the team's fans.

"Your 'Gino, Gino' cheers were my favourite. I wish I could hear them again. You have been amazing," he said.

So on Sunday, hundreds of fans gathered outside his hospital in Vancouver, Canada, to grant him his dying wish.

"Gino! Gino!" they cried, loud enough so Odjick could hear from his fourth-floor hospital bed.

His family wheeled him down so he could greet his adoring public and he apparently surprised everyone by standing and waving to his fans.

"I really appreciate you guys coming. It means a lot to me," he said.
