Facebook and Twitter throw support behind Apple in its battle with the FBI over iPhone encryption

Facebook and Twitter have backed Apple and Google in the refusal to submit to a US federal court order to help the FBI access an iPhone that belonged to one of the San Bernardino shooters.

In a statement released this afternoon, Facebook said it would continue to “fight aggressively against requirements for companies to weaken the security of their systems”.

“We condemn terrorism and have total solidarity with victims of terror. Those who seek to praise, promote, or plan terrorist acts have no place on our services,” the statement read.

“We also appreciate the difficult and essential work of law enforcement to keep people safe. When we receive lawful requests from these authorities we comply.”

Facebook echoed Apple CEO Tim Cook’s sentiments saying that complying with the order would “create a chilling precedent and obstruct companies’ efforts to secure their products”.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey today tweeted the company “stands with Tim Cook” along with a link to Cook’s letter.

Several other tech companies including messaging app WhatsApp have also sided with Cook.

Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL have each signed joint statements made by larger tech company associations, however, the companies would not comment further.
