A large explosion at a Paris Metro station has forced the evacuation of a subway stop.

Dozens of commuters were told to leave the stop on Tuesday night local time, but fears were allayed when police confirmed the blast was caused by a technical fault and was not a deliberate attack, Reuters reported.

The blast occurred near Place d’Italie subway stop, and the line has since resumed, metro authorities advised.

Police remain at the scene.

Two people reportedly suffered smoke inhalation, and some reports suggest as many as eight people were injured.

Residents have been on high alert after an attack outside the Louvre last weekend, where the 29-year-old suspect was shot after he set upon soldiers with a machete.

The attack was the latest in a string of assaults in France and thrust the issue of security back into the headlines three months ahead of the French presidential election.
