The senior Trump adviser also touched on the preparation for the next debate and the message the president is carrying "to the people of America".

"What we're focused on right now is basically carrying a message to the people of America that Donald Trump is a blue-collar president, he's the one who's going to get fair trade for this country, preserve our manufacturing base, " Mr Navarro said.

"And stand up to China – like Australia, I am happy to report, is doing right now.

"The message to the people of Australia is hold fast, hang tough, the Chinese Communist Party infected the world with that deadly virus.

'They're going to try to use that virus to put pressure on everybody and we need to hold fast."
