Vision of a dog’s dramatic rescue after nearly three days stuck neck deep in a mud pit has been released by US police.

Pluto, a 13-year-old Australian Shepherd, had gone missing from his owner’s home in Pennsylvania and was near death when discovered by the officers.

“I just pictured my own dog and what I would want somebody to do,” Willistown Township Patrol Officer Mike Kushner said.

The rescue took place on May 9 but footage of the incident was uploaded to the Willistown Township PD’s Facebook page over the weekend.

Kushner and fellow officer Sergeant Mike Martin had to use wooden boards to traverse the mud pit in order to get close enough to rescue Pluto.

His owner, Sheila Shorr, told local media a vet said Pluto is expected to make a full recovery.
