New York Police had a horror find outside a Brooklyn funeral home with dozens of bodies discovered in unrefrigerated trucks as the city endures a rising death toll from the coronavirus pandemic.

According to sources of the New York Post, 40-60 dead bodies were stacked in U-Haul trucks and on the floor of Andrew Cleckley Funeral Services in Flatlands.

Police were alerted to the bodies after neighbours reported a "foul odour" and investigated on Wednesday evening.

The street had to be closed off from the public as police investigated. Witnesses claimed the bodies were being stored in the trucks outside of the facility for "several weeks" during the pandemic.

"You don't respect the dead that way. That could have been my father, my brother," neighbour John DiPietro told The Post.

The funeral told police the bodies were supposed to be transported to a crematorium but they were not picked up as planned.

The state's Department of Health are reportedly looking into the matter in addition to police authorities.
