Commentator rues parking spot as six hits his car

A Kiwi cricket commentator's excitement at calling a huge six was quickly soured after he realised the ball may have hit his car outside the ground.

Calling a game for Sky Sports, former New Zealand Test wicketkeeper Ian Smith's voice raised several octaves as Otago Volts batsman Jesse Ryder latched onto a delivery from Wellington's Firebirds seamer Luke Fletcher at Hamilton’s tiny Seddon Park.

However, in a classic piece of commentary, Smith didn't miss a beat as the ball sailed out of the ground and crashed into the roof of what he thought was his car.

"Oh-ho-ha that's out of the ground. That's gone. It's downtown...it's on my car," Smith quipped.

"It is. I think it hit my car. (I) don't believe it. Ah the downside of getting a park so close. Oh, no."

Co-commentator Mark Richardson then chipped in: "Did you pay insurance?", to which Smith replied: "No. It's a rental. I don't believe it.

"I think it's mine. For God sake Jesse. How am I gonna get out of that? At least I've got evidence."

Fortunately, Smith then realised he might be in the clear as he watched a replay of the shot and may have parked 30m away.

"It's the same colour (as mine). It's around about the same place (my car is). I know I parked it there about five hours ago," he said.

"(But) I don't think I was that far down...I think I might be okay."

While we're yet to hear whether, in fact, it was Smith's car, the moment made for some funny commentary.
