Charles Manson agrees to marry 26-year-old

Notorious mass-murderer Charles Manson has agreed to marry a 26-year-old woman from behind bars.

Manson, 80, and Afton Elaine Burton were issued a marriage certificate on November 7, AP reported.

No specific date has been earmarked in the certificate and the couple have 90 days to get married or they will have to reapply.

Ms Burton, who goes by the name 'Star', moved from Illinois to Corcoran, California, where Manson is imprisoned, nine years ago.

She said the marriage would have happened earlier if Manson was not dealing with "some situations".

"Y'all can know that it's true. It's going to happen," she said.

"I love him, I'm with him. There's all kinds of things."

Manson previously denied he was going to marry Ms Burton, who is reportedly now estranged from her family, when speaking to Rolling Stone magazine last year.

"That's a bunch of garbage. That's trash. We're playing that for public consumption," he said.

The couple will be allowed 10 guests who are not inmates to the ceremony.

Manson is not eligible for conjugal visits, AP reported.

Manson and three of his followers, dubbed 'The Manson Family', were jailed in 1971 for murdering nine people, including heavily-pregnant actress Sharon Tate, in California in 1969.

Manson was initially sentenced to death, only to have his sentence commuted to life imprisonment after California abolished the death penalty.

He has been denied parole 12 times, the latest in 2012.

He will be 92 when next eligible for parole in 2027.

Ms Burton said she believes Manson is innocent and will get a new trial.
