Cards Against Humanity trolls customers and makes $71k by selling nothing

Cards Against Humanity managed to make US$71,145 (AU$98,870) on Black Friday, by selling customers absolutely nothing at all.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, the company took down its normal online store and replaced it with a payment form.

The form gave visitors to the site the option to pay five dollars to the company, for nothing in return.

More than 11,000 people took part and made a donation.

“This year we offered our customers the ultimate Black Friday experience – the ability to buy nothing from us for $5,” the company said in a statement.

“11,248 people gave us $5, and 1199 people gave us more than $5 by filling out the form more than once.

“One enthusiastic fan gave us $100. In the end, we made a windfall profit of $71,145.”

The company went on to remind its fans it is well known for its charitable donations.

“Since 2012 we've raised nearly $4 million for organizations we love like Worldbuilders, the Sunlight Foundation, the EFF, DonorsChoose.org, the Wikimedia Foundation, and the Chicago Design Museum,” it wrote.

“We even started a $500,000 full-ride scholarship for women getting degrees in science.”

This time around, however, the company confirmed it had decided to spend the money.

“We’re happy to announce that this time, we kept it all,” it announced.

The statement was accompanied with an elaborate list of the company’s staff members and every purchase they had made with the money.

One employee, Claire, put a down payment on a car. Jenn spent US$800 (AU$1112) on a Lord of the Rings Legolas Lothlorien Long Bow, Maria bought a US$480 (AU$667) scotch, Alex bought US$500 (AU$695) worth of kitty litter, while Henry bought his mum a car.

All 17 of the staff members made donations of their own however, giving around US$20,000 (AU$27,794) to various charities.
