A mystery ‘blood-like’ liquid was filmed leaking from a Vancouver transit bus's roof in a scene witnesses compared to a horror film.

"We got s--- leaking back here!" passenger Luka Banicevic said as he filmed the opaque red liquid gushing from the roof of the 99 B-line bus last Thursday.

"A little bit of panic ensued in this packed bus behind me, as you can hear from all the voices. The walls resemble a scene out of 'The Shining.' Bus might need an Exorcism," he later wrote on YouTube.

The viscous elixir dripped from the ceiling and ran down along the hand rails at the accordion section of the bendy-bus, forming a large pool on the floor.

"Open the door," passengers shouted to the driver as they moved away from the fluid.

"Hazardous. It's flammable, probably," Mr Banicevic yelled.

"It could be blood. Should probably stop the bus," he said shortly before passengers egressed from the vehicle.

One passenger pointed out the liquid was likely hydraulic fluid but one YouTube commenter suggested it was anti-freeze that leaked from a ruptured tube which is "toxic to get into the eyes and mouth and can be irritating to skin if allowed long exposure".

Canada's CBC reports Translink are investigating the incident and speaking to maintenance staff to determine what the liquid was.
