Bigotry has bubbled over in Britain with anti-Islamic protestors taking to the streets of Newcastle in a rally organised by a far-right European group.

Riot police were needed to quell the rage as protestors marched on chanting “Terrorist scum, off our streets”.

They waved English flags, anti-mosque flags and even neo-Nazi flags, with hundreds filling Newcastle’s main square to voice their anger.

Protestors told 9NEWS they thought Islam was a “disgrace” that had “taken over Europe”.

The crowd is the disturbing voice of an evolving minority in the UK, upset by what they call the “Islamisation” of the West.

Far-right European political group Pegida organised the rally, which was its first in England.

Locals staged a counter-rally, stating that racism was “not welcome” in Newcastle.

As more people flocked to the counter-rally, some Pegida protestors crossed the line to cause trouble.

Five people in all were arrested.

Pegida claimed the rally as a success, and said London would be the location of its next demonstration.
